Re: bug fixes in 6.0

Cathleen -

First, this is not a bug - this is the intended behavior of FrameMaker
and FM+SGML. The issue is what you want to have happen. Choices are:

1. When a file is opened, FM automatically updates any cross-references
and/or text insets. This choice will change the Modification Date,
as the file is modified by these actions.

2. When a file is opened, you do not want references/text insets to be
updated. This action means that the Modification Date is only changed
by your explicit actions of altering/updating the file.

Frame defaults to the first behavior, which is why when you open a
document, it is automatically marked as 'dirty' - the asterisk after the
pagecount in the footer of the window that indicates a change has been
made but not saved.

If you wish to have FM act as in the second case, then you will need to
make the following changes in each file, as, to the best of my knowledge,
these are file-specific settings and not global settings.

1. Under the EDIT menu, select Update References

or use the keyboard shortcut: ESC e U [press/release each key in sequence]
(capitalization is significant: that's Escape, lowercase e, uppercase U)

2. in the resulting dialog window, using the "COMMANDS" pop-up in the
upper-right corner, select "Suppress Automatic Updating..."

3. Now, select both the checkboxes to suppress updating Cross-References
   and Text Insets.

Note: you can get to this dialog directly via the shortcut: ESC e S

4. Click "Set"

Now, in this document, the modification date will only be changed when
you make changes to the file. You will also have to explicitly update
the cross-references/Text Insets, via the Edit->Update References dialog.

Cross-references within the same file, or to other files that are open,
are always updated when you print, even if the automatic update feature
has been disabled. Text insets are updated if A - they have been set to
update automatically and B - the timestamp of the file indicates it has
changes since it was imported/last updated in FM.

| Does anyone know if the Modification date bug has been fixed in 6.0? (The
| one that changes the modification date everytime a file is opened) If not,
| then can anyone tell me if there is a workaround for using revision dates?
