I have an even bigger problem, that of not realizing the
PDF files are vector graphics and won't be affected by
downampling of bitmap images...

I guess the PDF files are simply too complex or detailed
for the resulting PDF to become any smaller in size.

If someone still has an idea on what to do except for
replacing the PDF files with some other formats, feel
free to reply.
