HOW TO HANDLE XREFS TO AND FROM TEXT INSETS (1) Create a working book file that contains all your usual components PLUS the text inset files. (Yes, that's right, even though they appear twice in the book: once as component files and once as insets in another component.) This will be in addition to your main book file that just has the usual components, including those that host text insets. (2) Make cross-references from WITHIN text inset files to other files in the normal fashion. (3) Make cross-references to text inset headings from OUTSIDE the text inset, as follows: a/ In the file hosting the text inset, insert a cross-reference to the text-inset heading as usual by selecting the text-inset file as the target Document in the xref dialogue. b/ In the text-inset file, examine the cross-reference marker placed at the beginning of the target heading and note its hash codes. c/ In the file hosting the text inset, double-click the cross-reference, change the target file to current, change the Source Type to Cross-Reference Markers, locate the hash code you noted from the target cross-reference marker, and make the cross-reference point to that. (4) In the working book file (that also has the text inset files as components), update the book. (5) In either your main book file, or your working book file printing just selected components, make the PDF. All cross-references should work as hyperlinks. (6) Ask Adobe to include a smarter way of making inbound and outbound cross-references to or from text insets. This does take somewhat more work to set up in the first place, and the text at the "referring" end of the hyperlink does not update text at the "target" end changes as it would do with a regular x-ref, but it sure seems like a lot less work than having to do that conversion to text every time you print the document, and a whole lot less risky than having to remember that extra step each time. Sad to say, xrefs within text insets are non-functional in the PDF. My "solution" has been to convert all text insets to text just before printing to Distiller and then close the files without saving. Admittedly, this is fraught with peril. For one, you have to remember to do it. For another, you have to remember *not to save*! If you're as forgetful as I am, it helps to have a backup set of files somewhere. :-} Richard ------ Richard G.
