I think the only way to do this is to disable 'generate acrobat data' when you print to the distiller. But that prevents all bookmarks from being generated. I'm not sure what your mean by "I use cross-references to designate words," but it sounds like you're using x-ref for something other than its designed purpose. In which case you may very well experience unitended consequences.
