Change Bars appear even when not enabled (FM 5.5.6 on Solaris 2.7)

FM 5.5.6 on Solaris 2.7

Document formatting properties set not to enable automatic change bars
(the check box in the dialog box for automatic change bars is
unchecked). The document is part of a book.

Even with the document formatting property set as stated, I still get a
change bar when I edit the document. Any other things to check or
explain this apparently anomolous behavior?
