Toolbar buttons and strange little symbols

Hello Framers
I'm using FM6.0 and I have two question:

1) I've found that the Bold button on the Text Editing toolbar doesn't work
for me.  To apply bolding to a word I have to use the Character catalog.  Is
this an FM issue, or is it just me?

2) When I print up my pages, they come out with a crosshairs along the edges
and corners and little swirly circles in the corners.  My documents are a
custom page size--8.5" width by 7" height. Does the custom page size have
something to do with this? How do I make these go away?
