Safe Installation of FrameMaker 6.0 / FrameMaker+SGML 6.0 on Macintosh

The question of how to SAFELY install FrameMaker 6 or FrameMaker+SGML 6.0
on a Macintosh system that already has Acrobat 4.05a installed has been
posed a number of times. For all purposes below, FrameMaker 6.0 also refers
to FrameMaker+SGML 6.0.

If you don't properly install the software, you may have some unpleasant
surprises occur.

First, make sure that you are current with Acrobat. The current Acrobat
release is 4.05a with "update 1". The upgrade from Acrobat 4.0 to 4.05
was a free upgrade shipped to registered users of Acrobat 4.0. It is not
downloadable from our web site. Uninstall Acrobat 4 (drag and drop Acrobat 4
folder to "trash" saving any custom settings files and plugins or plugin
folders), then install Acrobat 4.05a (CDROM may be labelled 4.06).
"Update 1" to Acrobat 4.05a is available for download from the Adobe web
site; execute that updater.

You do NOT need to uninstall FrameMaker 5.5.6 prior to installing 6.0.

Install FrameMaker 6 or FrameMaker+SGML 6 using the CUSTOM INSTALL.
Do NOT use the default SIMPLE INSTALL; it will bunnystomp over your
Acrobat 4.05a installation by trying to independently install
Acrobat Distiller 4.05. By default, the CUSTOM INSTALL will NOT
install Acrobat Distiller 4.05. Be sure to keep the "Create Adobe PDF"
option UNchecked; checking it will cause Acrobat Distiller 4.05 to
be installed. Generally speaking, you will want all options checked
except for "Create Adobe PDF" and "Fonts" (unless you don't currently
have Arial and Times New Roman installed on your system).

You should then install the AdobePS 8.7 driver from the folder by that
name on your installation CDROM (assuming that you haven't installed it
already).

Note that Acrobat 4.05a installs a driver plugin that results in a new
printer instance, "Create Adobe PDF." That "virtual printer" automatically
connects FrameMaker 6 and all other applications directly to Distiller 4.05.
As in the past, I personally strongly recommend that you print to this
"Create Adobe PDF" printer (using the "generate Acrobat data" option, if
desired) in lieu of using the "save as PDF" feature.
