Non-breaking Spaces Cause Spurious "Word" Spaces

Title: Non-breaking Spaces Cause Spurious "Word" Spaces

I use non-breaking spaces (nbs) to keep related text items together, for example (U = the non-breaking space character),

        "flowUA",
"Choose FileU> UtilitiesU> Merge To Baseline",
"Click the Save buttonU(GRAPHIC-HERE)" and so on.

But I have noticed that, when the non-breaking space is adjacent to a non-alphabetic character or punctuation, spurious spaces are inserted in PRINTED pages or characters are obliterated by a right displacement of the character to the right of the nbs:

"Choose Fil eU>Utilitie sU>Merge To Baseline", and
"the Save butto nUGRAPHIC-HERE)" [note left parenthesis missing].

The text looks fine on screen.

Has anybody an explanation and a cure for this phenomenon?
