The Acrobat QA group tested the manual deinstall/reinstall instructions for FM 5.5.6 and AdobePS 5.1.1 on WinNT, included below. These instructions involve manual changes to your Windows NT system, so the usual caveats apply. You should not try this if you are not comfortable directly changing system files. Back up any important data on your machine before making changes. Adobe is not responsible for any damage that occurs to your system as part of removing the AdobePS 5.1.1 driver. AdobePS 5.1 is available through ftp from Adobe: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/printerdrivers/win/5.x/drivers/aps5eng.txt ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/printerdrivers/win/5.x/drivers/aps5eng.exe Other languages are available through this same directory. ...Lee : Lee Richardson : mailto:lhr@adobe.com : +1 408.536.6412 : : Dev Mgr, FrameMaker : Adobe Systems, Inc : +1 408.537.5113 fax : _______________________________________________________ Manual workaround for AdobePS 5.1.1 & FM 5.5.x on WinNT Background: the AdobePS 5.1.1 printer driver for WinNT4 does not handle generated Acrobat data or color separation information from FM 5.5.x. AdobePS 5.1 does work, but won't install over a later version. These instructions describe how to manually uninstall AdobePS 5.1.1 from WinNT4, then reinstall AdobePS 5.1. These steps have been tested with FrameMaker and Acrobat 4.x. Note that you will temporarily lose all PS printers, including Distiller Printer. 1. Open Start>Settings>Printers 2. Identify (using Device Settings) all AdobePS Printers. These will be all printers created with AdobePS rather than PSCRIPT. 3. Right click on each printer, including Acrobat Distiller, and delete the printer (there is no need to delete Acrobat PDF Writer since it does not use the driver) 4. Reboot the system 5. Open c:\Winnt\System32\Spool\Drivers\W32x86 6. Search for and delete the following files (if they exist): AdobeJpn.NTF AdobeKor.NTF AdobePS5.DLL AdobePS5.NTF AdobePSU.DLL AdobePSU.HLP AdobeZhS.NTF AdobeZhT.NTF DefPrtr2.PPD 7. Open c:\Winnt\System32\Spool\Drivers\W32x86\2 and repeat step 6 8. Install AdobePS 5.1 on the machine (AdobePS 5.1 is on the Acrobat 4.0 CD and it is also available on the Adobe web site). Note: During installation of the Adobe PS 5.1 driver, you will need to reinstall all of your printers, including the Acrobat Distiller printer. To re-install the Acrobat Distiller printer: 1. Select a Local Printer 2. Select the appropriate Distiller PPD from the following directory: ...\Acrobat4\Distillr\Xtras 3. Select the PDF Port as the location/port for the Acrobat Distiller Printer. Make sure that this printer is not shared. 5. Leave the default printer name as "Acrobat Distiller" 6. Finish installation of the driver 7. Reboot NT. ** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@omsys.com ** ** with "unsubscribe framers" (no quotes) in the body. **
