FrameMaker Crashing on Print to PS: a Clue or Two Would Be Nice

All:

A PS file was successfully created by printing to the AdobePS 4.3 driver
which was set to create a file. An incomprehensible font warning appeared.
This file then 'successfully' distilled but all characters were turned into
little rectangles EXCEPT for anything in Courier.

But, when using FrameMaker's inbuilt 'print to file', it
crashes while printing to PS or saving to PDF. This occurs whether I use
AdobePS 4.3 with the HP LaserJet 4si or Distiller 3.02 PPD. There are no
PostScript fonts on the system, only TrueType. A FrameLog file full of hex
garbage is produced.

[FrameMaker 5.5.6, FrameScript evaluation installed, Acrobat Distiller 3.02,
Acrobat Reader 3.02 and 4.0, AdobePS 4.3 with Distiller 3.02 PPD printing to
file or HP LaserJet 4si PPD printing to file or paper, all TrueType fonts,
Windows 98, HP OmniBook 2100]
