Wim, Corel WordPerfect 8 is our word processor of choice. [I don't want to catch too many arrows, but as far as I am concerned, it is a much better program than MS-Wrod, even though the MS product is more widely used.] We move a tremendous amount of material from WP8 into FM 556 on Win95. NOTE THAT I AM SAYING FM 556. There were more problems with FM 553. The first step that we take is to "TAG and STRIP" the WP8 file. Most of the material that comes from our authors is a real hodgepog. We have developed text-based tagging macros that handle tagging of italics (i.e. pubnames and emphasis), bold (emphasis only), etc. The result looks like "XXXITALPUBONFramers MagazineXXXITALPUBOFF". (We then use FrameScript to apply character tagging.) We use the same type of system for some sorts of paragraph tagging. Following that, we STRIP -- highlight everything and take it to ONE font, size, etc. We remove virtually all other types of codes. We do no attempt to extract styles -- because OUR authors are not consistent enough. Much of this is handled by macros. Most of the time, we simply 'File, Import' the native WP8 file into FM and when FM presents the file type dialog, CHOOSE WP7. (NOTE that is WP7 -- there is no WP8 available in FM 556 in Win95.) However, we have found that if the WP8 file contains Tsrt codes (essentially forced soft returns -- i.e. forced line breaks), that these won't convert properly. They either come out as hard returns, or the two words become connected -- I don't remember which. If the WP8 document contains such, you have two choices. 1) Remove/fix/text-placeholder the Tsrt codes. The placeholder method simply is a find/replace [Tsrt] for "zzz", then in FM, "zzz" for a line break. OR 2) SaveAs to RTF and bring that into FM. All this may be useless to you. You may have a more complex document that includes graphics. In that case, I don't know -- we have never had such a document; we would not make one ourselves and we won't accept such from our authors. Note that the Windows WP8 file format is "supposed to be" the save for WP6.1, WP7, and WP8. However, there are a few features in WP8 that are not backwards compatible. However, if your documents are not highly complex, the three formats are essentially the same. -- Jay Smith e-mail: jay@jaysmith.com The Press for History(tm), The Press for Education(tm), The Press for [Your Industry](tm), The Press for....(tm) On-demand printing and binding of hardbound books.
