The consensus approach is to use multiple book files. Thanks for the many helpful replies I received. I would make the observation that multiple book files will require multiple generated ToCs, indices, and any other generated files to correspond with the name of the book file(s). Careful file management would be especially important. For example, we have developed a manual for software that runs under UNIX and Windows NT (and other platforms too). The UNIX version has three appendices; the NT version has only one.
