Subject: Help hacking Mac font family names

OK, I give up. Does anyone know how to 'harmonize' (if that's the right term) the names of fonts on the Mac in order to get them to show up as variations of the same font? Particularly to match a customized FrameMaker configuration under Windows. Since the Mac doesn't have a MAKER.INI equivalent, I know you can't just configure Mac FrameMaker itself to deal with this. And if it can be done using ResEdit to hack the fonts themselves, I haven't been able to figure out exactly how. My specific problem has to do with Arial Narrow, which I am being forced to use instead of Helvetica Condensed (one of my font faves) in order to cater to the mass market of standard Windows installs. Within FrameMaker for Windows I set up MAKER.INI and FMSGML.INI to integrate Arial Narrow as a variation of Arial. It works fine. I would like to do the same for my Mac system that provides my company with most of the new template design development, but have been unable to accomplish it to my satisfaction. The closest I have gotten is by using Fontographer to open Arial Narrow TrueType fonts, change the font family name appropriately, and then generate the TrueType again; then using ResEdit to edit FrameMaker's FOND resource to integrate the new fonts. This works fine except that the route through Fontographer screws up the screen representation of the TrueType fonts. The new fonts just look kinda crummy compared to the originals at actual size. They're fine once I zoom in, but I'd like to work at 100% magnification. What I'd like is to find out if there's any way to just change the font names for my Arial Narrow set of fonts. Anyone know of a Mac font utility that accesses TrueType font names and allows renaming, or some other workaround, like using ResEdit or hex editing?
