Don't know if this helps you or not, but FWiW:
Due to quick release of Word97, the save as RTF filter was not really
saving as true RTF, but some sort of stripped Word format which only
Word97 could read. A little while after Word97's release, MicroSoft put
out an update which is a true Word97 "SAVE AS RTF filter". Check
MicroSoft's site. The same goes for WORD97's "WORD6.0/95 Save As
filter".
