Have a look at http://wgl.typ.pl/ (WGL Assistant).
It lets you trick XP into making a non-unicode font out of unicode fonts; the Central European character set is probably what you need to enable.

(There is also a way to do this by meddling with the Registry, but WGLA is easier.)
