Marker character limit

Is there any way to change the number of characters that can be in a marker?
I know the current limit is 256 but for localization issues we want to
change that limit to 150 to allow room for Japanese translation. I thought
there might be a way to trap the 'insert marker' event through the API but
did not see any notification points that might work for that. Is this value
of 256 hard coded into the application, or is there some other way of
changing this value?
