Re: Illustrator and Photoshop Compatibilities

David,

(1) Illustrator is well-behaved cross-platform as long as you use
standard character encodings of standard fonts. Round-tripping
should work well. Make sure to save all files with standard file
suffixes (.AI for Illustrator files, .EPS for Encapsulated PostScript,
.PDF for PDF files). For EPS files, be sure to always select the
Windows-compatible TIFF preview option which is compatible on both
Windows and Mac.

(2) Photoshop is exceptionally well-behaved cross-platform. Again,
make sure to use standard file suffixes.

(3) MacOS X has a graphics system that uses PDF but PDF is not its
"native format." Do NOT, repeat do NOT, use MacOS X-generated PDF in
graphic arts workflows. For reliable PDF that is appropriate for
such workflows, you still need to use Acrobat or products such as
Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign that can produce high quality
standard (not "think different; think incompatible") PDF.
