Thomas, The ability of FrameMaker 7 to import .AI files is strictly a side effect of Illustrator 9 and 10 by default generating .AI files that have both Illustrator data and corresponding PDF data. In fact FrameMaker only "looks at" the PDF data in the .AI file and not the original Illustrator data. If the .AI file is save and the "create PDF compatible file" option is not selected, the content of the .AI file is not imported into the FrameMaker document. Similarly, in PDF files exported by Illustrator in which the "save editability" option is selected, FrameMaker only looks at the PDF data which by the time FrameMaker imports the file, may in terms of content be different than the Illustrator private data. Thus, I would NOT recommend any workflow in which .AI files are directly imported into FrameMaker, but would rather defer to Illustrator content saved either as .EPS or .PDF. - Dov At 10/14/2002 08:50 AM, Thomas Michanek wrote: >OK, I need this issue resolved by someone who knows: > >Can FrameMaker version 7.0 import *.ai (Illustrator native files) >directly, without going via EPS? >What shortcomings and restrictions are there? > >I've been told by a client that FM7 supposedly can import AI files >better than FM6, specifically without importing the entire page >containing the illustration, and just the image itself (cropped). >Or are you still getting a PDF import operation behind the scenes? >(which would give you the entire page, right?) > >I've also been told you could drag-and-drop the AI file directly >into FM, without creating a copy, i.e. importing by reference. > >Any clarification by Dov, Lee, or anyone who's actually tried >this in practice would be very helpful. > >Thanks! > >- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - >Thomas Michanek, FrameMaker/UNIX/MIF expert >Technical Writer, Uppsala, Sweden >mailto:Thomas.Michanek@telia.com >http://go.to/framers/ >- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ** To unsubscribe, send a message to majordomo@omsys.com ** ** with "unsubscribe framers" (no quotes) in the body. **
