README!!! Multiple Master Font Printing Problems under Updated Windows 2000 and Windows XP

Adobe Systems Incorporated has received reports from the field
of problems with PostScript printing of text formatted with
Multiple Master font instances under Windows 2000 and Windows XP
after certain operating system “updates.” This is a description
of the symptoms, causes, and the temporary workarounds for the
problem.

SYMPTOM

Under Windows 2000 (all versions) and Windows XP (both versions)
after certain OS updates, PostScript printing of text formatted
with Multiple Master font instances (used in conjunction with
ATM Lite 4.1 or ATM Deluxe 4.1) appears to stop working completely
for Adobe FrameMaker and all non-Adobe applications that do not
generate their own PostScript. The problem manifests itself as areas
on the page (both actual printed page and PDF page created via
distillation of PostScript by Acrobat Distiller) that are devoid of
text where text formatted with a Multiple Master font instance
should appear. Screen display of the document is correct, showing
all fonts as expected. Output to non-PostScript devices (such as
inkjet devices or Winfax device) likewise appears to be correct.

CAUSES

Windows 2000: Applying Recommended Update Q322842 for Windows 2000
(all versions) that supposedly resolves a problem of a “deadlock
occurs between two threads of system GDI in Windows 2000” (Microsoft
Knowledge Base Article Q322842) triggers the symptom described above.

Windows XP: Applying Service Pack 1 for Windows XP (both versions)
triggers the symptom described above.

WORKAROUNDS

Windows 2000: Do not manually apply and do not let Windows Update
automatically apply Recommended Update Q322842. If you have already
applied this update, use the Add/Remove Program control panel to
uninstall the update. Reboot and correct printing of text formatted
with Multiple Master font instances should be restored.

Windows XP: Do not manually apply and do not let Windows Update
automatically apply Service Pack 1 for Windows XP (! both versions).
If you have already applied this service pack, use the Add/Remove
Program control panel to uninstall the service pack. Reboot and
correct printing of text formatted with Multiple Master font
instances should be restored.

Adobe has notified Microsoft of the problem and the urgency of a
hot fix for its resolution. We will advise you when such a fix is
available.
