If there are more than one <$chapnum> in a file, all <$chapnum>s in the file will have the same number. I have also noticed that it may lead to non-existing errors, like the book error log reports a lot of duplicate files and unresolved cross-references (that in fact are not unresolved). However, in some cases it is OK.
