All:

False alarm -- it's all to do with your wrist action.  If you select the
anchored frame as a 'character' in the paragraph by dragging the I-beam
cursor through it, the condition tags DO show in the status bar.

It is only when you click on the frame border (arrow selection cursor) that
the condition tags are not displayed.  (Thanks to Rick Quatro.)
