If you convert your manuals to PDFs, my "PDF Power Search Form" may be of use to you. Among other features, this form enables you to save your query, if you have the full version of Acrobat or Acrobat Approval; it is equally useful with Reader, but you won't be able to save the query. You can type all of the "forbidden" words in one query, separating them with commas, and use with all/selective Acrobat Catalog indexes (run once on your PDFs and updated once the PDFs are recreated). The Power Search Form (to be used with Acrobat/Reader 5.0x only, http://www.microtype.com/resources/SearchForm.pdf) was created to demonstrate different ways to enhance the Search function for a presentation I will be giving at the upcoming PDF Conference, www.pdfconference.com.
