Well, not to argue with a family member in public, as it were, but...

We did informal testing with Illustrator 9.x files importing into FM6 through the PlacedPDF (PDF Import) feature, and found that it worked. You can create Illustrator graphics with features that aren't supported in FrameMaker (transparency, some color modes), but it's otherwise pretty functional.

There are a couple caveats. First, there's no PlacedPDF on Unix, so this is a bad solution if you move docs between Mac/Win and Unix. Second, you should change the preference that controls the EPS level used for printing imported PDF pages - see the FM6 ReadMe file for details on the Win maker.ini setting and Mac resource setting that controls. Use at least EPS Level 2.

This is an opportunistic and unsupported feature; your mileage may vary. Check it out with representative samples moving through your entire workflow before you use it in a production situation. EPS is the supported solution and should be used if this doesn't work for any reason.
