My quick answer may have been a little flippant so here's a more detailed one: Create a book that contains all the files. IMO, You should never insert disconnected pages into a Frame doc. Use Frame's strengths in the book functionality to keep different layouts and different bits of information in different files. If your 2-col layout is one file, break it into two. The first file ending at the place where the 3 column layout shout begin (file1). The second file starts where the 2 column layout is to continue (File3). You then create a book with these two files and the 3-col layout file (File2) in the middle [File1/File2/File3]. In the case presented, it may be possible to have master pages for each layout possibility, but it becomes just another hassle when it comes time to publish or maintain the document. If the text moves, then so does the master page usage. That usage then has to be manually corrected and maintained. With a book and separate files, the manual maintenance worries are forgotten.
