Russ asked, and many answered: >So I'm curious what people think. Is it better to place figure numbers in >the main flow or in the anchored frame itself? Thanks for your opinions. I'll just add that one reason NOT to put a paragraph with figure autonumbers inside anchored frames concerns when it is encountered in Frame's flow handling during TOC and other list generation. I recall generations of Framers bemoaning and trouble-shooting their exotic figure numbering (or the placement thereof within a mixed TOC+figure list), and eventually yanking their captions out of the frames. Something about Frame incrementing a flow at a time, and those untagged flows represented by every text rectangle paragraph inside an anchored frame only get encountered after Frame has scrolled through the main flow of your file. If I remember correctly. Dunno if this particular behavior has ever changed in the several releases that have gone past sine I learned of it.
