Traditional books use consecutive page numbering. When people started producing technical manuals on material that changed frequently, they discovered that it was sometimes more efficient (less cost) to reprint only the changed pages and chapters. A changed chapter may have more pages that its previous version, so that gave rise to chapter style numbering. However, as others have pointed out chapter style numbering has distinct disadvantages when you are trying to locate a specific page number that is not in the chapter you are reading. Chapter style numbering is a reasonable compromise to use when you are creating a book where chapters will be replaced, such as in a ring binder. If your book does not get replacement chapters, then stick with the traditional consecutive page numbering.
