Yes, variables are the way to go. You can define separate character styles for the numerator, slash, and denominator, then play with the spread to kern the mess together nicely. When working with cookbooks and other texts that require many fractions, I name my variables: 12-half 13-third 14-quarter 23-twothirds 34-theequarters and so on. To insert the fraction, all I have to type is <CTRL>+0, followed by the two-digit fraction value, and <ENTER>.
