To simplify the availability and currentness of a FAQ to filter out repetitive questions on the list, why not take advantage of the World Wide Web? This is just the sort of problem that lends itself well to this solution. An online HTML FAQ that is properly maintained (with the URL attached to every posting distributed by the list server) would allow everyone to quickly check the latest version of the FAQ before posting a question. Moreover, refinements to the FAQ (beyond additions) would quickly develop as users posted questions that are variants or extensions of the original answer (or even the original question)! This would actually work in the same spirit as Open Source does for software: the FAQ would get more and more powerful, accurate, and helpful as time goes on from all the contributions of the list members. The main problem is finding a web site to host this, a set of "owners" of the FAQ, and a way to submit additions and corrections to it.
