building block error message

In the process of saving a .fm doc as .xml, I'm getting a "write 
message" that identifies an "unknown building block <Italic>".
I have not found any reference in Cookbook or FM's Dev Guide that offers 
any information for creating read/write rules to control building blocks 
(or character formats for that matter).
Anybody have a clue what this may be about, and what to do about it?///
