Re: FrameMaker's Future

Those who think they can somehow revive FrameMaker
support for the Mac are living in a dreamworld,

Well, I'd say more of a "wish" world. I agree with Dan that it's highly unlikely, unless Adobe decides to blow off FrameMaker altogether and either sells the remains to another company or spins it off.

1. FrameMaker was created by FrameTechnology in the
mid-to-late 1980s, thus the core code is nearly 20
years old. I've been using it since 1990

2. ...,, proving
the elegance and adaptability of the original core
code

Doesn't this sound a little self-contradictory? First he says the core code is outdated, then turns around and calls it elegant and adaptable.

4. ..., plus a half-assed HTML converter.

And that's being kind to it.

... And the ultimate killer App feature, the
ability to convert an EDD's format rules into XSL
instances is, apparently, unachievable.

At least within Adobe's corporate constraints. I've no doubt that it could be done.

8. ... began to produce a growing abandonment of
FrameMaker by the big license holders, which has now
reached a torrent. This loss of the big license
holders was the final blow to FrameMaker's future, ...

As a freelancer, I am too far removed from the corporate world to know about that. If it were so, 'twas a grievous fault, as the bard said.

... FrameMaker
has lost its chance to become the authoring system of
choice in this environment, which means it can never
again become the pre-eminent choice of large companies
requiring thousands of licenses.

That could very well be true, sadly.
