Re: advice asked regarding purchase of postscript printer

I have a color Xerox Phaser 860. It prints everything Adobe I have. It prints
black well, too. It duplexes and has an extra paper tray. I got the printer
free. I have to print a minimum # of pages per month and buy my supplies from
Xerox. Black ink sticks are free. We've added some color to our docs, but still
use very little of the color supplies.

If you're interested in getting one of these color printers, send me an email
off-list to becky@benchmarkpubs.com.

and also a Postscript printer. I have two questions:

Carol,

For what it is worth and understanding that I am an employee of Adobe,
consider the following:

(1) The LaserJet 2300 as well as all current LaserJet models that "support"
PostScript use a third-party emulation of PostScript. They do not license
Adobe PostScript. Numerous users have reported problems printing PostScript
to LaserJets with such "emulation" of PostScript. Some problems have been
resolved by firmware updates/upgrades obtained by badgering Hewlett-Packard
Technical Support; others haven't. Of particular difficulty has been the
printing of PDF files, InDesign documents, and graphically-complex pages in
general. Others can advise you of their personal experiences with these
printers,
both the good and the bad.

(2) You should look at the Xerox Phaser 4400 series as a very viable alternative
to the LaserJet 2300 for monochrome printing. (The Phaser 3400 is fully OEMed by
Xerox from elsewhere and has "CloneScript".) The Xante AW1200 is also an
attractive
alternative. The Oki B6100 series printers (but not B4300 or B8300) have Adobe
PostScript 3 and should be considered. Ricoh also has monochrome printers with
Adobe PostScript 3, but they are "higher end" devices in terms of speed, paper
size, etc.
